Sit-ins were when black men and woman would go into white only restaurants and just sit. They were fighting for black equality, that way they didn't have to feel discriminated against.

What happened to the people who did sit-ins? |
A lasting journey |
People who participated in sit-ins were treated very harshly. They were screamed at, beaten, the cops were called, etc. Sometimes they were beaten so badly they were hospitalized or killed.

The time that it took to get what they wanted was around four years. 1960-1964. In 1964, the Civil Rights Act was put into action. Because of this they were served non-segregated wherever they were.
